Beer Halls and Craft Beer Festivals

Across Japan, festivals bringing together many craft (regional) beer breweries are said to be commonly held, usually serving beer in small tasting glasses for easy comparison.

What it is

Festivals gathering craft beer breweries from across Japan under one roof are said to be commonly held, mainly in cities. They're usually organized by industry groups or executive committees, and the appeal is being able to compare beers from breweries around the country in one visit. Some permanent beer halls also run limited-time craft beer tasting fairs of their own.

Tips for enjoying it

Most events are said to serve beer in small tasting glasses to make comparing easier. Many use a prepaid ticket or coin system, exchanging coins for pours as you go. Popular brews can sell out early, so arriving sooner is recommended if there's a particular brewery you want to try.

When to visit

Timing and location vary by event — some are outdoor summer events, others run indoors regardless of season. It's worth checking each event's official website for the schedule before you go.

At some events, staff from small breweries are said to explain their own beer directly, and many visitors are said to enjoy choosing while talking with the people who made it. Outdoor events can change or be cancelled due to weather, so checking ahead is recommended. Fairs held at a permanent beer hall can usually also be ordered alongside the regular food and drink menu. Many events are said to add food stands inside the venue, serving light bites that pair with beer.
